A. H. Baldwin & Sons Ltd, London Founded in 1872, A. H. Baldwin & Sons Ltd set up their in-house auction department ‘Baldwin’s Auctions’ in 1993 and have since expanded to hold regular auctions of all numismatic material in London, New York, Hong Kong. Baldwin’s have been based in central London for over 100 years and are the last remaining traditional coin dealers in London offering an old- fashioned personal service to help you build your collection with confidence.
Our extensive library, comprising thousands of reference books, allows us to research thoroughly all aspects of numismatics from Ancient times to the present day. Today our permanent staff of numismatists include: Edward Baldwin (European, Colonial, Onental and Russian coins), Steve Hill (English coins), Graham Byfield (Indian and Islamic coins and Commemorative Medals), Paul Hill (Ancient coins), Seth Freeman (British Tokens and Banknotes) and Julie Lecoindre (European and World coins).
The merger of Baldwin’s with Noble Investments (UK) PLC in 2005, and the acquisition in early 2008 of Apex Philatelics Ltd. and of Dreweatts & Bloomsbury Auctions in 2012, has seen the company expand to become a formidable market player offering a complete package for any collector of coins, stamps, fine art and collectables. In more recent times (2013), Baldwin’s has become a part of the Stanley Gibbons Group ple and is now a more powerful London Stock Exchange listed collectables retailer and ‘top 5’ UK auctioneer.
Baldwin’s has been a member of the International Association of Professional Numismatists (LAPN) since 1969, and is also a founder member of the British Numismatic Trade Association (BNTA), the British Antique Dealer’s Association (BADA) and individuals on their staff are members of the American Numismatic Association (ANA) and the Royal Numismatic Society (RNS).

Rouble 1742. Moscow, Red mint. 25.65 gm. Special eagle on reverse used on Ivan HI Roubles. Bit 107 (R1), Petrunin 18 (R). Rare. About very fine
Axfter Elisabeth removed Ivan III from power, she withdrew his coinage and had it recoined in 1741, 1742 and 1742. The coin offered above displays an eagle from Ivan’s coinage, while it is clearly not overstruck. Bitkin does not offer an explanation for this variety, but it is our opinion that the eagle hub for the reverse die of Ivan Roubles was kept and reused under Elisabeth at the Moscow mint for a limited time.

”’Pugachev Rouble” 1771. Novodel. 23.19 gm. Edge 6. Bit -- , Diakov -- , Sev --, Uzd --. The major works report only Edge 0 (plain) and Edge 1 (engtailed going right) for this type. Here the obverse and reverse center punches of a Sestroretsk Copper punch have been overstruck on a Novodel of Catherine the Great -- unpublished as such. Only later Novodel Roubles of Catherine the Great have Edge 6. Characteristic evidence of die rust on the obverse. The mintmark -- CIIb of the host coin is clear on the bottom ribbon wrap of the reverse wreath, while minor remnants of the host legend are visible on the obverse. Even the listed edges for this coin are noted as R3 by Bitkin and R4 by Diakov. Edge 6 is Excessively rare and with the coin’s other characteristics it is Unique as such. Pleasing old toning. Choice brilliant uncirculated
In his diary, the infamous early 19° Century collector and numismatic speculator, Grigort Lisenko notes that in 1810 certain Russian mint employees clandestinely struck various mules and fantasies on a medalhc press. Among those were plain edge silver strikes from the Sestroretsk copper Rouble punch. These pieces came to be labelled ’Pugachev Roubles” because the coin’s name no ruler and the year of the punch used — 1771, coincidentally coincides with the year
of the Pugachev Rebellion. Alccompamed by old collector’s envelope.

Catherine the Great was a great patron of James Tassie, ordering thousands of copies of classical carved gemstones after those in British public and private collections. These were delivered between 1783 and 1788 in specially-made cabinets, accompanied by a five-volume handwritten catalog. When James’ nephew inherited the business, he continued to deal with the Russian court and his work would have been well known to Alexander I.

In the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, the Russian team came in second to last place among the 18 participating nations. One newspaper deemed it "the shame of all the Russian peopl.” In order to prevent such an embarrassment in the Juture, Grandduke Dmitri Romanov ordered the creation of a Russian Olympics as a means of practice and training. The first such Pan-Russian Olympics was held in the Kiev Sports Grounds in 1913. Located in the Lukianivka, the Sports Grounds was the first permanent sports stadium in the Russian empire (it was destroyed in WW).
Olympics, sports, Ukrainian, even Judaic -- this very rare award medal encompasses a number of topical interests. It was made by the renowned Jenish jeweler Joseph Marshak, one of the Karl Faberge’s main competitors. Called the
Cartier of Kiev, Marshak was responsible in 1913 for all the Imperial gifts presented to Nicholas I. The medal above was commissioned later that year.

Hand of Corruption in a bag of coins, satirical eee to the “honorable” war minister of 1914-1915 whose munistry’s s bungling and eraft is blamed for the Russian war disasters / Jailor, a scimitar on his belt, Pd the disgraced Sukhomlinovy into a the fortress- -prison of Saints Peter and Pall before his execution by the provisional eovernment, Impertal eagle on wall in background. This is apparently the first time that this very rare and intriguing satirical fecal is betng offered in a public sale. About extremely fine $ 400
Chief of the General Staff (1908-1909) and Minister of War until 1915, Vladimir Sukhomlinov was disliked by the army committee of the Duma and resented by Grand Duke Nicholas Nicholaevich, commander-in-chief of the Russian forces in the early part of World War I. As minister of war he opposed training innovations that emphasized firearms over edged weaponry and resisted change. His enemies and detractors called him lazy, incompetent and dishonest, but his charm and favor with Tsar Nicholas II protected his apace Maurice Pateologue, the last French ambassador to the Gaunt Russia, described Sukhomlinov as “intelligent, clever and cunning, obsequious towards the tsar and a friend of Rasputin — a man who has lost the habit of work — I know few men who inspire more distrust at first sight.” ime ly, the negative opinion of Suk homlinov placed the responsibility of Russia’s military stagnation at his feet and Russia’s woeful lack of military pre ee al the outbreak of W Zola War I squarely on him. That opinion, meanwhile, at the time demonized Suk homlinov as a sort of Rasputin in uniform. In March 1916, he was finally accused on charges of abuse of power and treason after some of his close associates had been convicted of espionage (on behalf of Germany). For the first time in Russcan hestory a public jury took part in a political trial. In April, Sukhomlinov was imprisoned in Peter and Paul Fortress. In July, he was transferred to a hospital. His wife meanwhile sought help from Grigori Rasputin and Dr. Peter Badmay ev’, a Buryat Mongol popular in the upper strata of Russian society where mysticism and Tibetanicism held great fascination. Rasputin intervened on the minister's behalf with the empress. Within six months, Sukhomlinov was freed and placed under house arrest.
Afier the February Revolution, he was arrested again. Although acquitted of harges of treason, Sukhomlinov was found guilty of abuse of power and inactivity — leaving Recses unprepared for the Great War. Sente need to an open-ended ‘katorea’, bate he went to a fortress-prison. Turning 70, he was released on the first of May, 1918. Sukhomlinov emisrated to Finland, then Germany. In 1924 his Memoirs’ appeared. Dedicated to the deposed German E mperor Wilhelm Il, and highly critical of his former Imperial colleagues, it was translated and publishe d by the new Soviet government. Sukhomlinov himself was living then in abject poverty in Bae He was found frozen to death on a park bench two years later.
