HE following list of names of Chinese and Japanese artists comprises only those which are to be mentioned in these lectures. "To them have been added a few
names of dynasties, and of Chinese and Japanese Emperors. These are arranged, first, in order of the lectures: second, under each lecture, approximately in chronological order. In each case the oriental written equivalent is given, and an approximation to the date.
In the case of dynasties, the limiting dates are diven. For imperial reigns, the letters re. preceed the figures. Dates of birth and death are preceded by letters b, and d. respectively. But oriental chronology is so uncritical, that such precise dating has been attempted only where the evidence is strong. In the majority of cases the dates are preceded by the letters fl. for flourished, and are diven tentatively to cover the prob- able period of central creative work. This has been done in several instances even where dates of death are ordinarily given.
It must be specially noted that, in the case of Chinese names, I have given their first English equivalent according to the Japanese pronunciation of them. The modern Chinese Mandarin pronunciation follows in a parenthesis. The reasons for the preference of the Japanese sounds in reading Chinese written characters are that they are more easy to pronounce, that they probably come nearer to the ancient Chinese equiva- lent, and that, for the present, by far the larger critical mass of information must come from Japanese sources. But, by using the above triple Chinese lists, the reader can collate references from all sources.
I have to thank Mr. Aisaku Hayashi for his valuable collaboration in writing and revising the Chinese and Japanese characters for the names.
